Why nuance?
There are thousands and thousands (thousands of thousands?) of consultants out here. Some of them (most of them, probably) are good. A few are idiots. A tiny handful are really worth what you pay for them. You’d expect most of them are experts in their narrow field.
It’s not the big things that sets nuance apart. We provide many services you can hire, including media architecture, social network strategy, viral (nee organic) marketing, public relations, reputation management (online and off), crisis planning, writing and editing, strategic message development, conference design and development and much more. We have not only the wisdom to design superior strategy, but also the experience to execute it flawlessly.
More importantly, we are generalists in the age of specialists. Trained as writers, we learn quickly, see emerging patterns and connect the dots differently than people trained in one single way of thinking. We know the world is changing, and that the world of media is changing faster than most people can keep up. This creates a difference in perspective – what worked yesterday may not be the right approach for tomorrow. We know we don’t know everything about media, but we know how to figure it out. Fast.
We study the intersections of trends:
- social networks, digital media and decentralized communication
- sustainability, triple-bottom-line companies and social entrepreneurism
- globalization, the bottom of the pyramid and emerging innovation hubs
- systems thinking, chaordic organizations and complexity theory
- change agents, disruptive technology and innovative business models
We have chosen the road less traveled. Although we navigate the streets and conference rooms of New York, San Francisco, and other global cities like locals, we have chosen to stay out of the echo chambers, and think for ourselves.
We live above 5,000′ in Boulder, Colorado. Some people say the air is different here. We spend some time each week traveling in the mountains above 10,000′, even 12,000′. The air is definitely different up there, and from the continental divide that we can see from our office, the continent falls off towards the cacophony on both coasts.
It’s this distance, physically and metaphorically, that allows us to provide you with triangulation. We exist outside of the mindset of Madison Avenue, Silicon Valley, London’s Financial District and Dubai’s Media City.
What ties it all together? Omnivalence.
Omnivalence is the appreciation of nuance and the recognition that conflicting perspectives often add light and meaning. Where ambivalence is a state of indecision based on two opposed opinions, omnivalence embraces the paradox of the often all-too-real contradictions we experience in the world, and transcends the false dichotomies presented by inculcated dogmatic thinking.
Here’s a great treatise that explains omnivalence in a description of literary giants including Virginia Woolff, Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad, and physicist Albert Einstein.
To bring it back around to something more grounded, we draw on a broad variety of media strategies and technology that connect people in new ways. Technology can unlock meaning, de-mystify process and level the playing field. We recognize that systemic design (based on systems theory) is disproportionately influential in the outcomes of working groups. Therefore, we look for smarter ways to organize information, and the people who use it.
